Ranked Choice Voting Is Coming to DC

Why is this changing?

In November 2024, DC voters overwhelmingly approved Initiative 83,  with 73% voting “yes.” On July 14, 2025, the D.C. Council voted 8-4 to provide funding to implement Ranked Choice Voting for DC elections. That means RCV is on track to be used in upcoming elections!

Benefits of RCV?

Ranked choice voting is able to determine the candidate with the strongest support, allowing the will of the majority to emerge. It allows for DC voters to rank their most preferred candidates without fear of “wasting” their vote.

What is Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)?

Ranked Choice Voting allows you to rank candidates in order of preference (first choice, second choice, third, and so on), instead of picking just one. That means your vote still counts even if your top choice doesn’t win!
